Nvidia CEO Huang's Jacket Sells for $960,000

A black Tom Ford jacket worn by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang sold for $960,000 at Sotheby’s, underscoring the immense brand equity of the artificial intelligence sector's leading figurehead.

A black Tom Ford leather jacket worn by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang sold at a Sotheby’s auction for $960,000, far exceeding its $40,000 to $60,000 presale estimate.

The final bid highlights the brand equity surrounding the leader of the nearly $5 trillion artificial intelligence chipmaker. The garment was photomatched to Huang by PSA and authenticated by James Spence Authentication, confirming he wore it during Hon Hai Tech Day in Taipei on October 18, 2023.

Proceeds from the sale are earmarked for the Edge Institute, a nonprofit managed by San Francisco venture capital firm Long Journey Ventures. The organization operates pop-up villages that convene founders and researchers for month-long live-in gatherings, drawing more than 1,300 people to its flagship Healdsburg, California, event last year.

The funds will support fellowships, grants, and residencies. Spokespeople for Sotheby’s and Nvidia did not respond to requests for comment regarding whether Huang directly initiated the sale.

The auction marks a departure from Huang's established philanthropic channels. He and his wife, Lori, both Oregon State University graduates who met in a campus lab, manage the Jen-Hsun and Lori Huang Foundation, which holds an estimated $10 billion in assets.

Their historical giving has targeted higher education and AI research infrastructure. This includes a $50 million commitment to Oregon State University for a research complex, alongside a $22.5 million donation to the California College of the Arts and further gifts to Stanford University.

Tech chief executives frequently rely on signature attire to project corporate identity, from Steve Jobs’ turtlenecks to Mark Zuckerberg’s hoodies. Huang, worth an estimated $172 billion, has maintained his leather jacket uniform for at least two decades. The Tom Ford pieces he wears during major Nvidia keynotes typically cost several thousand dollars, with some exceeding $10,000.

"You may know me better as 'the guy in the leather jacket who repeats things three times,'" Huang wrote in a 2016 Reddit AMA. Despite the fierce public association with the garments, Huang credits his family for the aesthetic. "I’m happy that my wife and my daughter dress me," he said during a 2024 interview.
