US Navy Forward-Deploys First Virginia-Class Submarine to Guam After Maiden Patrol
The USS Minnesota has completed its first deployment from Guam, signaling a concrete step in the US Navy’s strategic allocation of advanced undersea assets to the Indo-Pacific region.
The United States Navy’s USS Minnesota (SSN-783) has returned to Naval Base Guam, concluding its maiden patrol as the service’s first forward-deployed Virginia-class fast attack submarine. The vessel arrived at the overseas facility earlier this week following an extended operational period in the Western Pacific.
This deployment marks a tangible shift in US defense resource allocation, embedding advanced nuclear-powered capabilities closer to potential Indo-Pacific conflict zones. Forward-deploying the Virginia-class platform underscores a long-term commitment to sustaining warfighting readiness at strategic outposts rather than relying on mainland rotations.
During the patrol, the submarine participated in the multinational Valiant Shield 2026 exercise, which concluded on July 1, 2026. The crew also conducted port visits to Okinawa and Sasebo in Japan, demonstrating the Navy’s capacity to sustain undersea operations across varied Pacific locations.
The vessel’s operational footprint extended to Australia, including a visit to HMAS Stirling in Western Australia and the port of Darwin. It also supported bilateral engagements through Exercise Lungfish, a tactical development drill conducted alongside the Royal Australian Navy.
Capt. Christopher Carter, commander of Submarine Squadron 15, noted that the return demonstrates the Navy’s ability to employ advanced Virginia-class capabilities in the Pacific. He emphasized that operating from Guam highlights the readiness and endurance the platform brings to the Western Pacific.
The successful patrol resulted in 20 enlisted sailors and two officers earning their submarine warfare insignia, reflecting mastery of complex undersea systems. The USS Minnesota joins a growing forward-deployed presence at Naval Base Guam, which also hosts the Los Angeles-class submarines USS Springfield and the recently arrived USS Tucson.
Commissioned in September 2013 and relocated to Guam in November 2024, the vessel represents a sustained strategic investment in regional undersea dominance. Cmdr. Jeffrey Cornielle, the commanding officer, stated the crew succeeded in "executing missions vital to the defense of the homeland and strengthening our alliances and partnerships."
Master Chief Electronics Technician Joshua Garrett, the chief of the boat, noted that the crew answered every challenge with "discipline, character and an unwavering commitment to one another." This forward-deployment strategy continues to reshape the Pacific Submarine Force’s operational baseline and defense posture for the foreseeable future.
