Xiaomi prices SkyNomad SUV 23% below Tesla to drive volume
Xiaomi has launched its SkyNomad premium SUV at a 23% discount to Tesla, deploying aggressive pricing to close a significant gap toward its annual sales target.
Xiaomi has officially entered the premium SUV market with its SkyNomad series, pricing the vehicles 23% below comparable Tesla models. The aggressive pricing strategy signals a deliberate attempt to disrupt the current hierarchy in the electric vehicle sector and force a margin squeeze on established incumbents.
For investors, the launch underscores the intense pressure on Chinese EV manufacturers to prioritize market share over near-term profitability. By undercutting Tesla, Xiaomi is betting that scale and brand loyalty from its consumer electronics division can translate into automotive volume.
The discounted launch is directly tied to the company's ambitious delivery goals. "We attribute the SkyNomad series’ aggressive pricing to the company’s ambitious full-year volume target of 550,000 units," Deutsche Bank said in a Friday research note.
Achieving that benchmark will require a massive operational acceleration. Xiaomi recorded 180,055 units sold in the first half of the year. “Xiaomi needs to sell an average of 61,000 units per month in the second half of 2026 to reach this target,” the bank noted.
To support the volume push, Xiaomi is relying on proprietary engineering. Founder and CEO Lei Jun said the company spent three and a half years developing its Kunlun architecture for the new vehicles. The SkyNomad series utilises an extended-range classification, meaning a small petrol engine recharges the battery without driving the wheels, allowing for more than 1,000km of travel on a single charge.
Lei stated the new vehicles would have “off-road capabilities while offering users expansive interior space and flexibility in reconfiguring seating.” He also highlighted that the vehicles feature Xiaomi's Dragon Armour battery system, which uses a pack structure optimised specifically for better performance and safety in range-extended vehicles. This focus on technical differentiation will be critical as the company attempts to sustain its aggressive sales trajectory.
