Kioxia forecasts $11.78 billion Q2 profit, missing consensus estimates

The Japanese memory chipmaker guided for a massive second-quarter profit driven by artificial intelligence investment, though the forecast fell slightly short of market expectations while the company announced a major share buyback and stock split.

Kioxia expects to generate 1.89 trillion yen, or roughly $11.78 billion, in operating profit for the July-September quarter. The Japanese memory chipmaker attributed the massive earnings projection to surging investment in artificial intelligence infrastructure driving demand for its products.

Despite the enormous projected earnings, the guidance fell short of market expectations. Eight analysts surveyed by LSEG had penciled in an average operating profit estimate of 1.95 trillion yen for the period. The forecast does, however, represent a significant acceleration from the 1.27 trillion yen the company reported in the preceding April-June quarter.

For investors, the slight miss against consensus could temper some of the enthusiasm surrounding the semiconductor sector's current boom. Memory chips are a critical component in AI hardware, and the projection confirms that capital expenditure from tech giants is translating into tangible revenue for component suppliers.

Alongside the earnings guidance, the company announced a substantial capital return program to reward shareholders. Kioxia authorized a share repurchase plan valued at up to 800 billion yen. The buyback will target a maximum of 30 million shares, signaling management's confidence in its cash generation capabilities.

A buyback of this magnitude reduces the total number of outstanding shares, which typically increases earnings per share and provides underlying support for the stock price. In a highly cyclical industry like semiconductors, aggressive share repurchases during peak profitability are often used to signal long-term financial stability to the market.

The company also revealed plans to restructure its equity to improve market accessibility. Kioxia will execute a three-for-one stock split that becomes effective on October 1.

Stock splits lower the nominal trading price of individual shares, making the equity more affordable for retail investors and potentially increasing overall market liquidity. Combined with the massive buyback and strong AI-driven profit outlook, these corporate actions indicate a strategic push to broaden the company's investor base while capitalizing on the current technology supercycle.
