BitMart winds down exchange after withdrawal delays, token crash

BitMart is shutting down its trading platform as user withdrawal delays and a plunge in its native token highlight ongoing solvency and liquidity risks across the digital asset sector.

Crypto exchange BitMart will halt all trading on Aug. 26 and cease operations entirely on Jan. 31, 2027. The platform has already stopped accepting new user registrations and deposits. Futures trading has entered reduce-only mode, and spot markets no longer accept new orders.

“After a careful evaluation of the Company’s operating conditions, market environment, and future strategic direction, BitMart has made the difficult decision to commence an orderly wind-down of its trading platform operations,” the company said in a Sunday notice.

The closure follows a sharp deterioration in user confidence. BitMart’s native token, BMX, lost nearly 70% of its value, dropping from roughly $0.31 late Friday to about $0.09464. The decline accelerated as users reported significant delays in withdrawing funds, particularly Tether USDt (USDT), with some requests pending for hours.

Blockchain data from Arkham highlights the liquidity strain facing the exchange. Wallets attributed to BitMart held approximately $71 million in crypto assets on Sunday, a sharp decline from roughly $102 million on July 6. Of particular concern for users attempting to exit, the tracked wallets held only about $91,000 in USDT. The largest single asset in these wallets was roughly $41.5 million in WFI tokens from stablecoin banking platform WeFi, an illiquid position that could complicate the wind-down process.

BitMart acknowledged the withdrawal issues in its announcement. The exchange stated that some requests could be subject to additional compliance and security reviews that might extend processing times. BitMart did not respond to requests for comment regarding the specific constraints on its USDT reserves.

BitMart’s closure reflects a brutal Darwinian shakeout in the digital asset sector. The platform joins a growing list of crypto trading venues closing their doors, with both BitMEX and Dango announcing the shutdown of their respective trading platforms this week. For market participants, the rapid collapse of BMX and the subsequent withdrawal bottlenecks serve as a stark reminder of the counterparty risks inherent in holding funds on centralized exchanges.
