Hyperliquid stock trading surpasses crypto volume in DeFi first

Tokenized stocks and commodities have overtaken cryptocurrency trading on decentralized exchange Hyperliquid, signaling a structural shift where traditional assets now drive digital finance liquidity.

Traders on the decentralized exchange Hyperliquid moved more money through tokenized traditional assets than through cryptocurrency during the week of July 13 to 19. Real-world assets accounted for $25.1 billion, or 52%, of the platform's $48.2 billion in total volume. ARK Invest's director of digital assets research, Lorenzo Valente, placed the running figure even higher at $26 billion, or 54%. "We are entering a new era for DeFi," Valente said.

The volume shift carries outsized implications for digital market structure. Hyperliquid processed $50 billion of the $79 billion in total perpetual decentralized exchange volume industry-wide last week. Consequently, the $26 billion routed into tokenized stocks, oil, and indices on Hyperliquid alone exceeded the combined crypto perpetual volume of every other decentralized exchange globally.

This traditional asset trading is facilitated by HIP-3, a framework Hyperliquid launched in October 2025 that allows outside developers to build perpetual markets using the exchange's infrastructure. To access the system, builders must stake 500,000 HYPE tokens, a requirement currently valued at roughly $30 million. The platform has already used this infrastructure to host pre-IPO markets for companies including SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI.

Since June, individual equities have displaced indices and commodities as the dominant asset class within this system. Single stocks now represent 61% of all real-world asset trading on the platform. SK Hynix, the South Korean memory chipmaker competing directly with Samsung to supply artificial intelligence systems, emerged as the most heavily traded stock.

ARK Invest has tracked Hyperliquid's evolution closely. In September 2025, CEO Cathie Wood stated on the Master Investor podcast that the platform "reminds me of Solana in the earlier days," labeling it "the new kid on the block." ARK has not confirmed any financial position in the platform since that time.

Valente warned that the current dynamic could permanently fragment the decentralized trading landscape. "I'm no longer convinced RWA trading will naturally aggregate on the same venue as crypto," he wrote. He predicted that dedicated platforms will likely emerge to lead the real-world asset category, making a venue's grip on Bitcoin and Ethereum flow "far less important than many people assume." He concluded that traders focused solely on crypto tokens "are focusing on the wrong market."
