US crypto sector claims 34,000 direct jobs, $55bn GDP boost

A cryptocurrency trade group's funded report projects significant US economic impact, but the input-output modeling relies heavily on assumptions rather than an established industry workforce profile.

The US crypto industry directly employs 34,000 people and is on track to contribute more than $55 billion to domestic gross domestic product in 2026, according to a commissioned study by the National Cryptocurrency Association. The report, analyzed by the Pragmatic Policy Group, estimates the sector supports a total of 232,000 jobs when accounting for supplier industries and worker spending.

Pragmatic Policy Group built its estimates using a $23.22 billion US crypto revenue figure from Statista and the Bureau of Economic Analysis’s 2024 input-output tables. Because crypto is not classified as a standalone industry in the federal framework, analysts mapped the sector to existing categories like securities and commodity contracts.

Chief economist Oliver Browne noted that each direct crypto job generates roughly six additional roles across the broader economy. However, the 232,000 total figure largely captures indirect economic activity rather than crypto-specific employment. The model attributes 75,000 jobs to suppliers and 123,000 to household spending by workers in those groups.

Market professionals should note significant methodological limitations. The report cites an average annual wage of $133,000 across all 232,000 supported roles, nearly double the national median of $64,000. This figure includes janitorial, food service, and delivery jobs, reflecting the mathematical quirks of the input-output model rather than actual crypto compensation.

The geographic distribution underscores that crypto remains a highly concentrated coastal industry. California and New York account for 111,415 of the supported jobs combined, representing nearly half the national total. Texas, Washington, and North Carolina follow, while the 12 states defined as the Heartland collectively support just over 17,000 jobs.

A few smaller markets show targeted growth. Colorado supports 5,797 jobs and a $1.3 billion economic contribution, buoyed by Denver’s 131 blockchain firms and the state accepting crypto for tax payments. North Dakota accounts for 813 jobs, tied to a proposed 700-megawatt facility and a planned USD-backed Roughrider Coin.

Within the 34,000 direct roles, software and data engineering dominates at 10,100 positions, followed by compliance and finance at 5,450. NCA President Stu Alderoty, who also serves as Ripple's chief legal officer, said the data proves crypto has a "real, positive impact on American jobs, wages, and economic growth." The study's own appendix concedes its occupational allocation is a modeling assumption due to the lack of an observed workforce profile.
