XRP Ledger passes 1 million AI agent transactions

XRP Ledger passes 1 million AI agent transactions

The XRP Ledger has processed over one million transactions initiated by AI agents, marking the early stages of a machine-to-machine payment economy that is drawing in traditional financial giants.

Transactions initiated by autonomous AI software on the XRP Ledger have surpassed one million, with the network's developers projecting rapid acceleration toward the ten million mark. RippleX’s head of engineering, Akinyele, noted the milestone and forecasted further expansion. "I was very pleased to see the 1 million milestone on XRP Ledger, but I think we’ll blast through 10 million," Akinyele said.

Agentic payments involve AI-powered software completing financial transactions on behalf of humans, eliminating the need for manual approval. For the financial sector, this represents a potential shift in how digital services, data, and computing power are purchased. Crypto companies are positioning their networks to serve as the underlying wallet and settlement infrastructure for these automated agents, allowing them to operate continuously without relying on traditional bank accounts or credit cards.

The push to standardize this nascent economy has united rival financial and technology firms. Ripple recently joined the x402 Foundation as a premier member, alongside Coinbase, Circle, AWS, Google, Mastercard, Stripe, and Visa. The protocol, initially built by Coinbase, enables automated payments for online services and APIs. "Our relationship with the x402 Foundation is really strategic because we can shape the governance, we can shape the technical aspects of how this agentic economy gets built out," Akinyele added.

To date, the majority of this onchain activity has been limited to purchasing data and API access. However, the infrastructure is expanding into physical commerce. Ripple-backed tech infrastructure startup t54 is working to integrate real-world merchants. "We’re also in the process of onboarding real-world merchants through ecosystem partners, which will enable agents to purchase physical goods and services over XRPL," t54 co-founder Chandler Fang said. "That’s one of the next major areas of growth we’re actively rolling out."

Blockchain networks are competing to become the default settlement layer for this automated economy by emphasizing operational metrics like speed and cost. "The main focus, obviously, is making it frictionless for AI agents to pay for APIs and digital services on XRP Ledger because of the strengths that we offer from a settlement perspective — so, three to five seconds," Akinyele said. "We have predictability in terms of transaction costs, and we’ve been purpose-built for payments from the get-go."
