Bitcoin tops $67,000 as crypto benefits from AI trade slowdown
Digital assets and crypto-related equities surged as advancing US crypto legislation and a cooling semiconductor sector prompted investors to rotate capital away from AI trades.
Bitcoin briefly traded above $67,000 on Tuesday, driving a broader rally in digital assets and crypto-linked equities. Ether approached $1,950, while publicly traded crypto companies posted double-digit gains. Coinbase climbed 12%, American Bitcoin advanced 14% and Cipher Digital surged 17%.
The immediate driver for the sector was legislative progress. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that Congress is at the "1-yard line" on passing the CLARITY Act. This long-debated legislation would explicitly define the regulatory boundaries between the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission over digital assets. Resolving this jurisdictional overlap is widely considered a prerequisite for large-scale institutional adoption.
The price action also reflects a structural rotation in speculative capital. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, which surged roughly 110% over the past year on AI enthusiasm, recently fell more than 20% from its peak to enter a technical bear market. This pullback stems from growing concerns over unsustainable valuations and the risk of overbuilding AI infrastructure. Since late 2022, the AI narrative had aggressively diverted retail and venture capital away from digital assets.
Market professionals now see this dynamic reversing. “With Bitcoin at the top end of the range, we see the path of least resistance being higher and an elevated likelihood of a breakout of the range as the AI trade slows and the market becomes more comfortable with the path of interest rates,” said FRNT Financial CEO Stephane Ouellette. This suggests that as momentum fades for chipmakers, digital assets are poised to capture recycled capital.
For institutional investors, the convergence of a definitive regulatory framework and a fading competing tech trade represents a clear inflection point. Securing the CLARITY Act would remove a major legal overhang from the industry, providing the structural support needed to turn a short-term capital rotation into a sustained crypto market recovery.
