FirstBank backs Nigerian creative sector with Prideland musical sponsorship
FirstBank Nigeria has sponsored the conclusion of the Prideland musical trilogy, a move that highlights the lender's strategy to fund the creative economy as a driver of broader national development.
FirstBank Nigeria has backed the final staging of Prideland, a three-part musical by Theatre @ Eko that concluded over the weekend. The production marked the 50th anniversary of Eko Hotels & Suites, blending music, dance, and African folklore to tell a story of royal succession and political stability.
The financial backing was routed through First@Arts, a dedicated platform the lender uses to fund artistic expression and cultural innovation. For the bank, supporting this production is a deliberate push to develop a segment it considers vital to economic expansion. FirstBank stated the initiative directly aligns with its mandate to empower small businesses, youth, and the entertainment sector.
Building a viable creative economy requires sustained institutional capital, and Nigerian lenders are increasingly viewing the arts as an investment opportunity rather than a philanthropic afterthought. The Prideland trilogy served as a domestic showcase for this potential. Ice Nweke, the creative director of the production, emphasized the local nature of the project's execution: “We are using Nigerian talent. We believe there is so much talent in Nigeria. You don’t need to travel out to get talent; you can make it here.”
For market participants, corporate sponsorship of the arts offers a lens into a bank's broader client acquisition strategy. By financing local productions, FirstBank builds relationships with emerging creative enterprises that may eventually require formal banking services, production financing, or payment infrastructure as they scale.
The theatrical investment arrives alongside formal validation of FirstBank's core commercial operations. The bank recently won two categories at the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2026: Nigeria’s Best Bank for Large Corporates and Nigeria’s Best Bank for Customer Experience.
This marks the third consecutive year FirstBank has secured the large corporates title, reflecting its entrenched position providing financial solutions and advisory services to major Nigerian businesses. Pairing this institutional strength with cultural investments allows the lender to project stability to its corporate base while courting the demographic driving the country's entertainment consumption.
