SBI Funds lists at 7% premium, missing GMP forecasts

SBI Funds Management debuted on Indian exchanges at a 7% premium, falling short of elevated grey market forecasts despite record institutional demand during its ₹9,812 crore offer.

SBI Funds Management made its trading debut on Tuesday, listing at ₹613.30 on the National Stock Exchange and ₹610 on the Bombay Stock Exchange. This represented a premium of roughly 6.8% over the final issue price of ₹574 per share.

The opening, however, fell short of elevated market expectations that had been shaped by a robust grey market premium of ₹95.50. That unofficial indicator had pointed to a debut closer to ₹669.50, representing a 16.6% premium over the issue price.

The relatively muted listing arrives despite overwhelming institutional demand during the three-day subscription window in mid-July. The overall offer was booked 41.66 times. Qualified institutional buyers drove this demand, subscribing their allocated portion 140.11 times. Non-institutional investors subscribed 22.51 times their allocation, while the retail segment saw more modest demand at 3.60 times.

The sheer scale of the transaction highlights a significant divestment by its banking parent. The offering raised ₹9,812.91 crore entirely through an offer for sale of 17.10 crore shares. State Bank of India and Amundi India Holding used the book-built issue to sell down their stakes. Kotak Mahindra Capital managed the process, with Kfin Technologies serving as registrar.

The share allotment for the issue was finalised on July 17, just days before the stock began trading. The pricing band for the issue had been set between ₹545 and ₹574 per share.

Founded in 1992, SBI Funds Management operates as a joint venture between SBI and Amundi. It ranks as India's largest asset manager by assets under management. In fiscal year 2026, the company posted total income of ₹4,969 crore. While substantial on a standalone basis, this revenue contributed approximately 0.70% to the SBI Group's overall income, underlining the fund manager's incremental financial weight within the broader banking conglomerate.
