FAA eases certification path for air taxis and supersonic jets
The US aviation regulator is streamlining rules for next-generation aircraft, offering investors and manufacturers a clearer timeline to commercialize air taxis and supersonic flights.
The US Federal Aviation Administration is accelerating the market entry of electric air taxis and supersonic aircraft by overhauling outdated certification standards and adopting a more flexible regulatory stance.
For the nascent electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) sector, the agency is leveraging data from a pilot program launched last year involving eight companies across 26 states. This initiative is designed to integrate the new aircraft into the national airspace safely while avoiding overly rigid technical mandates. "We want to make sure that we're not being too prescriptive in those standards, and that we're letting the industry drive the innovation," said Deputy FAA Administrator Chris Rocheleau.
This phased regulatory approach reduces execution risk for eVTOL developers, who require substantial capital to scale manufacturing before generating revenue. Air taxi firms are positioning their battery-powered aircraft as a solution for sustainable, high-speed urban transport, offering short city trips or airport transfers that bypass ground congestion.
Rather than attempting a nationwide launch, the industry expects a localized rollout similar to the deployment of autonomous vehicles. "The FAA pilot program gives the eVTOL industry the ability to 'roll this out to a couple cities in a confined area that we can kind of work through the kinks in the system,'" said Archer Aviation CEO Adam Goldstein. "I think the world has learned a lot in how the autonomous vehicles have launched."
Beyond urban air mobility, the FAA is simultaneously addressing a major barrier to reviving commercial supersonic flight, which ended in 2003 when the Concorde was retired after 27 years of service. In June, the agency proposed the first of two rules required to lift a 1973 ban on supersonic flights over land.
A second rule defining acceptable noise thresholds for takeoff, landing, and supersonic cruise flight will follow. The FAA plans to finalize both regulations by mid-2027. "We think the rules are old and outdated," Rocheleau said.
The broader regulatory push also encompasses expanding drone operations and boosting space launches. Once the new airframes are certified, manufacturers and airlines will have the regulatory green light to capture market share in next-generation aviation. The mid-2027 timeline for supersonic rules, combined with the ongoing eVTOL pilot programs, gives aerospace investors a concrete horizon for capital allocation and risk assessment.
