IndiGo signs MoU for 1,000 LEAP engines, builds Indian MRO
IndiGo has committed to purchasing over 1,000 LEAP engines from CFM International and building a local maintenance hub, a deal that locks in long-term fleet costs as the carrier pursues global expansion.
IndiGo has signed a memorandum of understanding with CFM International for the supply of more than 1,000 LEAP engines. The agreement goes beyond a simple purchase order, encompassing a long-term material services pact for spare parts and support for a new engine maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility in India.
For investors, the structure of this deal is designed to remove a major variable from the airline's cost base. By securing guaranteed spare parts supply and establishing an in-house MRO capability, IndiGo aims to convert unpredictable maintenance expenses into fixed, predictable costs. This is a critical financial lever for a carrier currently powering more than 375 Airbus A320 and A321 family aircraft and rapidly scaling its operations.
Willie Walsh, IndiGo's CEO designate, framed the order as the engine for the carrier's next growth phase. "IndiGo's long-standing partnership with CFM International will continue as it enters its next phase of growth towards becoming a global airline," Walsh said. He noted that CFM has powered IndiGo since 2016, adding that the LEAP engine's reliability aligns with the carrier's targets for operational resilience and sustainability.
The supply chain implications for India's aerospace sector are substantial. H. Lawrence Culp Jr., Chairman and CEO of GE Aerospace, highlighted that the company will support IndiGo's expansion through its manufacturing facility in Pune, engineering operations in Bengaluru, and a domestic supplier network. Safran CEO Olivier Andriès called the agreement a significant milestone, noting that "continued investments in LEAP engine production and MRO capabilities reflect its long-term commitment to supporting IndiGo's growth and the development of India's aerospace sector."
Safran's contribution to the MRO aspect will lean on a facility it opened last year. The 45,000-square-metre site is Safran's largest LEAP engine centre and is expected to eventually handle 300 shop visits annually, featuring a next-generation test bench. Meanwhile, CFM International is rolling out technical upgrades to the LEAP engine, including a high-pressure turbine durability kit to extend engine life and a reverse bleed system to cut maintenance requirements.
CFM has delivered more than 10,000 LEAP engines to date, making it the fastest commercial aviation engine programme to reach that volume. As IndiGo absorbs this massive order, the integration of local MRO infrastructure and next-generation engine technology will be closely watched by analysts assessing the airline's ability to manage its accelerating fleet growth without sacrificing margins.
