Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang Leather Jacket Sells for $960,000 at Sotheby's

A pre-worn leather jacket belonging to Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang sold for $960,000 at auction, underscoring intense collector demand for artifacts tied to the artificial intelligence boom.

A pre-worn and signed black Tom Ford leather jacket belonging to Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang sold for $960,000 at a Sotheby’s auction on Friday. The final price followed 65 bids from 45 different collectors, shattering the pre-sale estimate of $40,000 to $60,000.

This valuation represents a massive premium over the garment’s retail price of just under $10,000. For market observers, the sale serves as a tangible metric of the intense fascination surrounding the leadership of the current artificial intelligence expansion.

The specific jacket auctioned was worn by Huang during a 2023 corporate event at Foxconn in Taipei, Taiwan. Huang has cultivated this signature look for nearly two decades, appearing in the same style of black leather jacket at major product launches and trade shows.

Sotheby’s head of modern collectibles Brahm Wachter noted the unprecedented demand. "The response to this sale surpassed even our highest expectations," Wachter said in a statement.

The Premium on AI Artifacts

The transaction highlights a growing market for corporate memorabilia as alternative assets. Investors and collectors are increasingly willing to pay steep premiums for physical artifacts connected to the technology sector's most valuable companies.

Huang has frequently acknowledged the branding power of his attire. He told a Reddit discussion in 2016 that he is known as "the guy in the leather jacket," and noted in a 2023 podcast that his wife and daughter are responsible for dressing him.

This distinctive uniform has also drawn attention from fellow technology leaders. In 2024, Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg participated in a garment exchange with Huang, resembling a professional sports jersey swap.

Later that same year, Huang presented Zuckerberg with a jacket he had been wearing on stage at a computer graphics conference. Acknowledging the item's unique value, Zuckerberg remarked, "This is worth more because it's used."

The proceeds from Friday's auction will not go to the executive personally. Sotheby's confirmed the funds will support a philanthropic initiative for the Edge Institute, a nonprofit organization focused on innovation.

The capital raised will be directed toward funding fellowships, grants, and residencies within the institute. This channels the speculative enthusiasm of the AI collectibles market into structured educational and innovative programs.
