Uber to buy Delivery Hero for $14.8bn

Uber will acquire Delivery Hero for $14.8 billion, creating a global delivery and mobility giant with $236 billion in pro forma gross bookings across 99 countries.

Uber has agreed to acquire German delivery group Delivery Hero for $14.8 billion, marking the ride-hailing company's largest-ever expansion in food delivery. The transaction will merge two of the world's largest logistics networks, creating a combined mobility and delivery platform operating across 99 countries.

The sheer scale of the combined entity presents a significant shift in the global gig economy. On a pro forma basis, the companies generated roughly $236 billion in gross bookings in 2025. Delivery Hero's portfolio, which contributed approximately $42 billion in gross bookings last year across 50 markets, will immediately diversify Uber's revenue base.

Under the agreement, Uber will absorb a roster of dominant regional delivery brands. These include foodpanda, Glovo, PedidosYa, talabat, HungerStation, and South Korea's Baedal Minjok. Uber plans to leverage this broader footprint to increase order density, which it says will improve courier earnings and strengthen merchant demand through its advertising and commerce tools.

For Delivery Hero, the sale ends a 15-year independent run that established it as a major European tech champion. "Uber's global mobility and delivery platform and our shared commitment to innovation make this the right partnership to build on Delivery Hero's strengths in local food delivery and Quick Commerce," CEO and cofounder Niklas Östberg said.

Investors will likely focus on the lengthy timeline to closure, which is expected in the second half of 2027. This extended horizon signals expectations of rigorous antitrust scrutiny across multiple jurisdictions. To mitigate regulatory friction in Europe, Uber has made specific concessions regarding its German footprint.

The company committed to maintaining Delivery Hero's Berlin headquarters and preserving the local workforce through at least 2029. Furthermore, Uber pledged roughly $2.3 billion in German investments over the next five years. This capital is earmarked to expand operations, grow the corporate workforce, fund autonomous vehicle initiatives, and forge partnerships with Germany's automotive industry.

The acquisition underscores an accelerating consolidation phase in the global food delivery market. Rival DoorDash has aggressively pursued a similar strategy, spending $3.9 billion to acquire UK-based Deliveroo and $8.1 billion for Finland-based Wolt.
