Paraguay's events tourism sector surges toward $484m in 2025

Paraguay's designation of a major Asunción coffee festival as a national tourism interest highlights a broader boom in the country's meetings sector, which is projected to generate $484 million this year amid a swelling expat population.

Paraguayan authorities have granted national tourism interest status to the Asu Coffee Fest, a culinary and cultural gathering scheduled for July 2026 at the Centro de Convenciones Universitaria. The designation follows a 2024 Senate declaration of national interest for the event. The festival, expected to draw 7,000 attendees over two days, will be preceded by an anniversary concert by Argentine artist Abel Pintos at the Teatro Lírico del Banco Central del Paraguay.

For market professionals, the festival's elevated status is a symptom of a much larger structural shift in Paraguay's services economy. The National Tourism Secretariat (Senatur) is deliberately positioning the country as a regional hub for meetings and events. This strategy appears to be yielding measurable returns, with the segment generating an estimated $296 million in economic impact in 2024. Senatur projects this figure will surge to $484 million in 2025.

Government data underscores the rapid pace of this commercial expansion. Senatur recorded 466 events nationwide between January and December 2025. The secretariat projects more than 50,000 foreign tourists will enter Paraguay specifically for international events this year, contributing to a total expected event participation of 106,246 people. The president of the Industrial Hotel Association of Paraguay noted that major international events in Asunción are the primary driver of the hotel sector's recent positive results.

A critical underpinning of this demand is Paraguay's growing foreign resident base. Authorities highlight a steadily expanding expat community, having issued over 28,000 residence cards in a recent year and receiving more than 15,000 new residency requests in the following period. The city's drawing power is now substantial, with central gatherings capable of attracting over 100,000 people during a single weekend. Visitor satisfaction data suggests strong retention, with 98.5 percent of foreign attendees stating they would return.

Early commercial indicators for the 2026 festival cycle reinforce the positive demand outlook. Organizers have already sold more than 3,600 advance tickets for the Asu Coffee Fest. Meanwhile, tickets for the Pintos concert are priced at 495,000 Guaraníes and are available through the Ticketea platform. These early sales point to sustained consumer appetite for premium cultural and gastronomic experiences in the capital.
