Spiro signs Gor Mahia FC deal to boost Kenyan EV market

Spiro has partnered with Gor Mahia FC to leverage football's cultural reach and overcome consumer trust barriers constraining Kenya's electric motorcycle market.

Spiro, Kenya’s largest electric mobility company, has signed a one-year partnership with Gor Mahia FC to become the club's Official Electric Mobility Partner for the 2026/27 football season. The deal shifts the company’s growth strategy beyond traditional advertising, using sports marketing to drive consumer adoption of its electric motorcycles and battery-swapping network.

The sponsorship targets a critical bottleneck for African clean energy firms: consumer awareness. While lower running costs attract commercial motorcycle riders, concerns about charging infrastructure and battery reliability continue to slow the transition from petrol-powered bikes. By embedding its brand within East Africa’s largest football fan base, Spiro aims to build trust in unfamiliar technology within a familiar cultural setting.

Spiro’s marketing push comes as competition intensifies across East Africa's electric mobility sector. The company currently operates more than 28,000 electric motorcycles and over 450 battery-swapping stations across 37 Kenyan counties. Its network has facilitated over six million battery swaps, with vehicles travelling more than 200 million kilometres.

Kenya has emerged as a primary testing ground for electric transport in Africa, driven by high fuel prices and government support for clean energy. Motorcycles are essential to both urban and rural transport, particularly the boda boda sector that moves millions of passengers daily. Converting even a fraction of these riders represents a substantial commercial opportunity.

The partnership highlights a broader shift in how technology and sustainability companies across Africa are allocating capital. Rather than spending solely on digital or commercial marketing, firms are directing funds toward entertainment and community engagement to reach younger demographics and accelerate behavioural change.

For Gor Mahia, the agreement diversifies revenue streams. “Football clubs today need strong partnerships to remain competitive and deliver value to their supporters. We are pleased to welcome Spiro Kenya as our Official Electric Mobility Partner and look forward to a relationship that supports the club’s ambitions while bringing supporters closer to the team,” said Ambrose Rachier, chairman of Gor Mahia FC.

If successful, this model of merging sports sponsorships with clean technology rollouts could establish a new blueprint for customer acquisition in emerging markets. Spiro will run matchday activations and digital campaigns throughout the season to convert football supporters into commercial vehicle users.
