US Nuclear Startups Draw $4.5B as AI Fuels Energy Demand

Venture capital is pouring into U.S. nuclear startups at a record pace as data center operators desperate for round-the-clock power partner with the federal government to fast-track next-generation reactors.

Global venture capital investment in nuclear fission and fusion companies reached $4.5 billion across 81 firms in the first half of 2026. At this pace, the sector is on track to surpass last year’s record of $6.2 billion spread across 93 companies. The capital surge is driven almost entirely by the United States, where hyperscalers are projecting energy demands at previously unthinkable levels.

Silicon Valley leaders are actively bankrolling this shift to secure zero-emissions, baseload electricity for artificial intelligence infrastructure. Bill Gates and OpenAI’s Sam Altman have emerged as prominent backers of fusion technology. "There's no way to get there without a breakthrough," Altman said at the 2024 World Economic Forum in Davos. "It motivates us to go invest more in fusion."

The shift to modular reactors

The public sector is matching this private enthusiasm. In May 2025, President Trump signed Executive Order 14301, directing the Department of Energy’s Reactor Pilot Program to accelerate the commercialization of advanced nuclear technologies. A primary regulatory target is the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s approval timeline. It previously took the regulator six years to approve the first advanced small reactor design from NuScale. The administration now aims to compress that process to just 18 months, a move that could grant first movers a critical advantage in locking down contracts with electric utilities.

Investors and regulators are pinning their hopes on small modular reactors (SMRs) to avoid the cost overruns that have plagued traditional nuclear construction. Georgia’s Plant Vogtle, the most recent U.S. nuclear facility, came online years late and billions over budget. SMRs, which can be manufactured offsite at lower costs, are viewed as the solution. However, the technology remains unproven at scale. While one SMR design has secured U.S. approval, no units are currently operational.

This rapid influx of private capital and fragmented development carries distinct risks for market participants. Some nuclear startups have reportedly begun ignoring voluntary safety guidelines previously accepted by the industry. Furthermore, critics warn that the focus on experimental SMRs and fusion is misallocating capital. "The administration is chasing unproven technology when it could encourage Wall Street investment in large-scale reactors," a recent Wall Street Journal op-ed argued, suggesting the push for novelty is actually stalling a broader nuclear expansion. For investors, the sector presents a classic tradeoff between capturing a segment of the AI-driven power boom and navigating unproven supply chains alongside safety liabilities.
