Nvidia's $5B AI deal anchors massive week for energy and tech VC

A $5 billion Nvidia investment in Safe Superintelligence topped a week of heavy venture capital deployment dominated by foundational AI models and the massive power generation needed to sustain them.

Nvidia invested $5 billion in Safe Superintelligence, a foundational AI lab founded by OpenAI co-founder Ilya Sutskever. The financing, structured as a long-term partnership to secure compute resources, anchored a week of exceptionally heavy venture capital deployment into U.S. startups.

The sector concentration of this week's funding underscores a decisive shift in how institutional capital is positioning for the artificial intelligence era. Investors are looking past application-layer software and directing billions toward foundational models and the physical infrastructure required to run them.

Power generation and grid capacity emerged as primary bottlenecks attracting major capital. Commonwealth Fusion Systems secured $1 billion from unnamed investors, bringing its total funding to $4 billion as it pushes to build a grid-scale fusion power plant. Nuclear energy also drew significant backing, with Antares raising $370 million in equity and $100 million in debt to develop compact fission microreactors for defense and space.

The data center supply chain is seeing parallel investment. Antora Energy closed a $550 million Series C, co-led by G2 Venture Partners and Eclipse, to deploy thermal battery storage at data centers. On the hardware side, Eliyan completed a $145 million round at a $1 billion valuation to build connectivity technology for AI infrastructure.

AI software itself continues to command premium valuations. Simile, a developer of AI simulation tools, picked up over $200 million at a $2 billion post-money valuation just five months after launching its product, in a round led by Greenoaks.

Outside the AI and energy complex, late-stage venture capital remained active. Function, a consumer health testing company, secured $450 million in growth financing from General Catalyst. Cybersecurity provider ThreatLocker closed $190 million in Series F funding to expand its platform internationally. In financial technology, CAIS raised $170 million from Vista Equity Partners at a valuation exceeding $2 billion, while corporate spend management firm PEX secured $160 million.
