STOXX 600 hits record high led by tech surge and easing oil prices

European shares surged to a record high, heading for a fourth straight monthly gain as a renewed technology rally and strong bank earnings insulated markets from geopolitical tensions.

The pan-European STOXX 600 index rose 0.9% to 655.2 by 0712 GMT, setting a new record and positioning the benchmark for its fourth consecutive month of gains. A broad improvement in global risk appetite drove the advance, supported by a convergence of sector-specific momentum and favorable commodity pricing.

Technology stocks anchored the upward move, with the sector sub-index surging 2.2%. Investors actively returned to artificial intelligence-linked equities, shaking off a notable weakness experienced earlier in the week. French semiconductor materials supplier Soitec led the broader market gainers with a 7.2% jump, while German chipmaker Infineon Technologies climbed 7% and Dutch equipment manufacturer ASML added 3.5%.

Brent crude slipped more than 1% to trade below $90 a barrel, providing a macroeconomic tailwind for equities. The price decline stemmed from increased shipments moving through a critical maritime chokepoint, alleviating immediate fears of severe supply disruptions. This dynamic effectively offset the absence of tangible progress in the US-Iran conflict, offering relief to investors wary of inflationary spikes.

At the individual stock level, quarterly results continued to dictate market direction. French lender Credit Agricole gained 4.5% after reporting second-quarter earnings that exceeded market expectations, reinforcing confidence in the financial sector.

The simultaneous strength in technology, easing oil prices, and positive earnings surprises underscores a deeply resilient European market. For portfolio managers, the price action signals that capital is readily available to deploy into risk assets. Crucially, investors are demonstrating a willingness to look past lingering geopolitical uncertainties and a busy calendar of global central bank monetary policy decisions, prioritizing tangible corporate fundamentals instead.
