ICICI Prudential AMC Q1 profit up 23% on income growth

ICICI Prudential AMC's first-quarter profit surged 23% to Rs 965 crore, signaling sustained revenue growth in India's asset management sector despite rising operational costs.

ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company reported a 23% increase in first-quarter net profit to Rs 965 crore, driven by broader revenue growth. Total income for the period reached Rs 1,745 crore, representing an 18% increase from Rs 1,477 crore in the year-ago quarter.

On a sequential basis, total revenue grew by 20% from the preceding quarter's Rs 1,452 crore. A primary driver of this quarter-on-quarter improvement was other income, which swung to a positive Rs 181 crore compared to a loss of Rs 90 crore in the March quarter.

Profit before tax rose 21% year-on-year to Rs 1,281 crore, up from Rs 1,062 crore. Sequentially, pre-tax profit grew 22% from Rs 1,046 crore, outpacing the 20% sequential revenue increase.

The divergence between the 18% top-line growth and the 12% rise in total expenses signals operating leverage for the asset manager. However, the composition and pace of these rising costs warrant attention from market professionals.

Total expenses reached Rs 464.4 crore during the quarter. Employee benefit expenses stood at Rs 204 crore, an 11% increase from Rs 184 crore a year earlier and a sharp 45% surge from Rs 141 crore in the March quarter.

Distribution costs also climbed, with fees and commission expenses rising to Rs 124 crore from Rs 103 crore a year earlier. Other miscellaneous expenses edged up to Rs 104 crore from Rs 98 crore.

The results arrive as the market weighs ICICI Prudential AMC against domestic peers such as HDFC AMC and Nippon Life India AMC. For investors, the earnings highlight a dynamic of robust revenue growth accompanied by rising personnel and distribution outflows.

The 45% sequential surge in employee expenses may draw scrutiny regarding future profitability if top-line growth decelerates. Ahead of the earnings announcement, ICICI Prudential AMC shares closed 1.6% higher at Rs 3,210 on the National Stock Exchange.
