Binance.US plans August CFTC license application for prediction markets

Binance.US will apply for a Commodity Futures Trading Commission license next month to launch a prediction market platform, intensifying competition in a rapidly consolidating sector under federal oversight.

Binance.US is preparing to apply for a Commodity Futures Trading Commission license next month to operate a prediction market platform. Chief Executive Officer Stephen Gregory announced the August timeline for the designated contract market application during the Rare Evo conference in Las Vegas. A company spokesperson later confirmed the strategic move.

Obtaining this specific designation would authorize the platform to list futures, options, and event-based contracts for retail clients under federal supervision. This regulatory framework provides a compliant pathway for digital asset firms to diversify their revenue streams beyond traditional spot trading. It signals a maturing market where regulatory approval is becoming a primary competitive advantage.

The strategic pivot places Binance.US in direct competition with established operators that already possess CFTC approval, namely Kalshi and Polymarket US. Other major digital asset exchanges are also aggressively consolidating their positions in this space. This is evidenced by Gemini obtaining its CFTC license earlier this year and Coinbase partnering with Kalshi to distribute event contracts.

Mainstream financial intermediaries are similarly seeking to capture retail demand for event-based wagering. Traditional brokerage platforms are actively exploring integrations with crypto-native providers to broaden their own product suites. Recent reports indicate that Robinhood is currently in negotiations with Crypto.com to feature its prediction market contracts directly within the brokerage application.

Despite the potential for federal authorization, the sector must still navigate a highly fragmented regulatory environment. More than a dozen state regulators are actively challenging the legal authority of these platforms to offer sports-related markets. The CFTC has firmly pushed back against these local efforts, maintaining that it retains exclusive federal jurisdiction over all event-based contracts.

For institutional investors and market professionals, this ongoing regulatory friction defines the near-term risk profile of the prediction market sector. Companies that successfully secure federal licenses while mitigating state-level enforcement actions will likely capture disproportionate market share. The upcoming August filing by Binance.US will serve as a critical indicator of how established crypto entities navigate this complex compliance landscape.
