Samsung Q2 Operating Profit Surges 19-Fold on AI Memory Chip Demand

Samsung Electronics reported a massive second-quarter profit surge driven by artificial intelligence memory chip demand, underscoring the sector's growth despite recent market volatility over lofty tech valuations.

Samsung Electronics posted a 19-fold increase in second-quarter operating profit, reaching 89.49 trillion won (US$62 billion). This represents a year-on-year surge of 1,813.8 per cent, driven primarily by robust demand for memory chips used in artificial intelligence applications.

The South Korean technology giant also reported a 130 per cent increase in revenue to 171.49 trillion won for the April-June period. Net profit climbed 1,299.9 per cent to 71.62 trillion won, aligning with broader market expectations.

These results arrive amid heightened volatility in South Korean equity markets. Traders recently unwound AI-driven positions over concerns that lofty profit forecasts may be unsustainable, triggering a sharp sell-off.

Following this broader market anxiety, Samsung shares dropped more than 12 per cent on Wednesday. Domestic rival SK hynix experienced even steeper declines, tumbling nearly 20 per cent after a 14 per cent loss the previous day, effectively halving its market value from last month's record highs.

SK hynix reported its own second-quarter results on Wednesday, revealing that operating profit and revenue fell short of expectations. However, its net profit still managed a forecast-beating increase of 1,242 per cent.

Samsung, SK hynix, and US-based Micron currently dominate the global production of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips. These specialized components are essential for AI processors powering advanced chatbots and image generation tools.

Industry analysts anticipate this upward trajectory will persist as North American technology companies accelerate capital expenditure on AI data centres. The ongoing AI expansion has simultaneously elevated pricing and shipment volumes for conventional NAND and DRAM memory chips, further benefiting Samsung's core operations.

The momentum in HBM is also creating ripple effects across Samsung’s broader semiconductor operations. MS Hwang, an analyst at Counterpoint, noted that the HBM business is "driving a significantly positive impact on their foundry business as well."

Hwang added that the company is effectively capitalizing on its market dominance. "In short, Samsung is leveraging its strong position in memory to aggressively capture share across most of its business units," he stated.
