EU grain harvest loses over €2bn to June heatwave

A late-June heatwave has wiped more than €2 billion from the value of the European grain harvest, forcing a 3% output downgrade that underscores the rising economic cost of agricultural climate volatility.

A late-June heatwave has slashed the value of the European grain harvest by more than €2 billion, according to grain traders association Coceral. The group cut its production forecast for the EU and UK by nearly 9 million metric tons, a 3% decline, with the London-based Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit projecting a steeper 5% drop. France and Hungary absorbed the heaviest financial blows.

Corn accounts for roughly half of the downward revision across Europe. In Germany, extreme temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius struck during the crop's vulnerable flowering period. "We're already seeing some corn plants failing to form cobs. That, of course, essentially amounts to a total crop failure," said Horst Gömann of the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Agriculture. German wheat yields are also expected to fall by about 10%, while barley harvests concluded weeks early and sit slightly below average.

For grain markets, this yield destruction highlights a critical economic constraint: farmers cannot simply irrigate their way out of droughts. While high-value crops like vegetables and fruit justify the capital expenditure of irrigation systems, the math does not work for staple grains. "For grains or corn, irrigation is not worthwhile. The costs are simply too high," Gömann said.

While Germany does not currently face a national water scarcity issue, the distribution of rainfall is becoming a structural problem for crop production. Heavy precipitation increasingly falls during winter, while summer growing seasons are marked by severe dry spells. To manage this uneven risk, farmers are diversifying planting schedules. "You never know when such extreme heat will strike," Gömann said, explaining that planting multiple grain varieties with different maturity rates spreads the risk of total loss across development stages.

Without the option of widespread irrigation, the agricultural sector is turning to genetic adjustments to stabilize supply. German farms are increasingly planting wheat varieties sourced from France, where the baseline climate already mirrors Germany's shifting conditions. "With wheat, for example, we're already making extensive use of genetics from France," Gömann noted.

Researchers are also developing semi-dwarf grains with shorter stalks that require less water and can support heavier ears without snapping in high winds. There is early-stage cultivation of drought-resistant crops like soybeans and millet, though these remain niche. Ultimately, the frequency of these multi-billion-euro weather shocks is accelerating. "The whole thing is happening quite quickly now," Gömann said. "This can certainly be attributed to the emerging climate change."
