The Odyssey and Toy Story 5 Lead Weekend Box Office for Universal and Disney

Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is projected to generate $84.5 million in domestic ticket sales during its second weekend, according to box office analysts. This performance follows a $263.7 million global debut and positions the Universal Pictures release to surpass $400 million in worldwide revenue by Sunday.

The anticipated 32 percent domestic drop represents a highly efficient retention of audience share for the studio. With North American theater counts expanding slightly to 3,942 and no major new studio releases competing for screen space, the film is capitalizing on a consolidated market. The adaptation of Homer’s epic poem stars Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, and Zendaya.

Through Thursday, the production had already accumulated $199.3 million in domestic receipts and $164.1 million internationally. Analysts at Box Office Pro estimate the second weekend will fall between $75 million and $85 million, whereas Box Office Theory provides a more conservative forecast ranging from $70 million to $80 million. Regardless of the final tally, the revenue trajectory remains highly lucrative for Universal and ensures the film will cross $400 million globally by Sunday.

Disney is also securing significant market share with its existing theatrical slate. Toy Story 5 is projected to earn $9.4 million domestically in its sixth weekend, pushing its domestic total to $447.9 million and its global tally to $966.2 million.

This trajectory places the Disney-Pixar animation close to crossing the $1 billion global threshold. Reaching that milestone would make it the third release of 2026 to achieve the feat, behind only The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and the Michael Jackson biopic Michael. Such billion-dollar grossing events are critical for studio parent companies to offset broader media segment volatility.

Disney’s live-action Moana is expected to hold the second domestic spot with $10 million in its third frame. Meanwhile, Universal’s animated feature Minions & Monsters is projected to add $9 million, bringing its domestic gross to $154.7 million. These sustained holdover performances underscore the financial value of established intellectual property in driving recurring theatrical attendance.

The weekend's limited new releases include Bleecker Street’s Hadestown: The Musical, which is forecast to earn between $7.5 million and $9 million from 1,944 venues. The Independent Film Company is also launching the revenge thriller Motor City, starring Alan Ritchson, across 1,600 domestic theaters.
