Nvidia funds $1.5bn Amkor US chip packaging expansion
Nvidia's $1.5 billion prepayment to Amkor Technology signals a strategic push to secure advanced semiconductor packaging capacity in the United States amid surging AI infrastructure demand.
Amkor Technology has secured a multi-year, $1.5 billion agreement with Nvidia to expand advanced semiconductor packaging and testing capacity in the United States. The deal, announced on Thursday, requires Nvidia to make a prepayment to fund the construction and scaling of Amkor’s domestic operations, including a significant facility in Arizona.
This capital commitment highlights a critical bottleneck in the artificial intelligence supply chain. As Nvidia produces massive volumes of data center processors, the ability to package these complex chips is becoming a constraint on total output. Advanced packaging, which involves combining different types of chips into a single package to boost performance, is increasingly as vital as the initial chip fabrication.
By committing capital upfront, Nvidia is effectively guaranteeing its access to this limited capacity. The companies will not simply expand existing lines; they will jointly develop next-generation packaging and testing technologies tailored specifically for Nvidia’s AI and accelerated computing platforms. This elevates Amkor from a standard vendor to a strategic development partner deeply integrated into Nvidia's hardware roadmap.
U.S. supply chain consolidation
The agreement also reflects a broader shift in semiconductor manufacturing geography. Amkor already supplies advanced packaging for Nvidia's current data center processors, but expanding this capacity to U.S. soil aligns with industry-wide efforts to localize the AI hardware ecosystem. This momentum accelerated in June, when Amkor entered a 10-year partnership with TSMC to enhance semiconductor packaging capabilities in the United States. Together, these deals indicate a concentrated effort to build out a domestic packaging infrastructure.
For market participants, Amkor’s positioning demonstrates the growing financial leverage of advanced packaging firms. The company also counts Advanced Micro Devices as a packaging client. The Nvidia prepayment structure provides Amkor with guaranteed funding to expand its advanced operations, mitigating the financial risk of building out expensive U.S. infrastructure while locking in the dominant player in the AI accelerator market for years to come.
