Coinbase enables businesses to accept USDC from AI agents

Coinbase is equipping businesses to process stablecoin payments from autonomous AI agents, signaling a shift toward automated financial infrastructure as machine-driven web traffic accelerates.

Coinbase is rolling out a suite of tools that allows its business customers to process USDC stablecoin payments made directly by autonomous AI agents. The cryptocurrency exchange announced the integration on Thursday alongside new AI-driven trading utilities and a software development kit aimed at building out what it terms the "agentic economy."

Businesses will process these machine-to-machine transactions using the x402 payment standard, a protocol Coinbase first introduced in May 2025. By facilitating stablecoin transfers over HTTP, the x402 standard allows AI systems, applications and APIs to handle payments natively. This removes the need for traditional graphical user interfaces, enabling software agents to independently manage finances and complete tasks on behalf of users.

The rollout is backed by data indicating a rapid shift in network usage. Coinbase reported that last month, for the first time, AI agent-generated traffic surpassed human traffic on the documentation pages for its Base blockchain network. The company argued that the current internet's financial infrastructure was built with "one assumption: a human clicking the button," a design flaw that has left developers and businesses without adequate tools for autonomous systems.

To bridge this gap, the newly announced trading tools allow users to monitor orders, access live market data, and execute trades automatically based on pre-set conditions determined by AI. The accompanying software development kit provides the necessary resources for developers building these agent-powered applications from the ground up.

For market professionals, the strategy underscores a significant pivot in the crypto industry. Exchanges and payment processors are increasingly positioning blockchain-based payments and stablecoins as the default financial infrastructure for artificial intelligence. Rather than merely competing for human retail or institutional trading volume, Coinbase is betting that the next major demand driver for crypto settlement will be machine-driven commerce.
