Bitcoin stalls at $66,000 as derivatives show long unwinding

Bitcoin's mid-July rally has stalled at $66,000 as flat macro markets and a lack of directional conviction force traders to unwind long positions rather than open new shorts.

Bitcoin is trading at $65,674, down 0.62% since midnight UTC, trapped in a $64,000 to $66,800 range for a third consecutive session. The cryptocurrency has consolidated following a 13% recovery from its July 1 low of $57,750. A failure to break $66,000 on Tuesday has halted momentum, leaving the market without a clear catalyst as equity futures dip and the dollar stays flat.

Futures unwind without panic

The stasis is reflected in derivatives markets where the 24-hour long-short ratio sits near perfect equilibrium. However, the drop in open interest tells a specific story that matters to risk managers. Bitcoin futures open interest has slipped to 743,000 BTC from over 760,000 BTC earlier in the week, pointing to long liquidations rather than fresh short positioning.

Traders should note a rising volatility profile that historically signals caution. Bitcoin’s 30-day implied volatility index has increased for five consecutive days. Since the launch of spot ETFs, this metric has maintained a negative correlation with the spot price, meaning the current rise in implied volatility often precedes a drop.

Options flows reveal a mixed but cautiously optimistic stance. Demand for Bitcoin's $70,000 call option expiring August 7 is notable, though traders are hedging with longer-duration puts. Market fear is evaporating as put-call skews for both Bitcoin and ether slide toward zero. Ether is showing particular strength, with open interest ticking higher and positive volume delta indicating active buyer aggression.

In the spot market, the Trump family-linked WLFI token surged 12.18% to $0.063, reclaiming a $2 billion market cap. AI-linked Morpho rose nearly 4% to $1.989, while Ethena added 2% to $0.092. Conversely, Lighter fell 2.96% as profit-taking continued for a third session following its 200% rally between May and early July.

Behind these individual moves, broader exchange data shows Binance retaining its dominant position. The exchange holds roughly 55% of industry user funds and 24% of spot market share. Binance drew net inflows in early July even as the wider tracked market experienced outflows.
