Best Buy Founder Schulze Sells $74M in Prearranged Stock Sale

Best Buy founder Richard Schulze liquidated $74 million of his holdings through a pre-planned trading program, a routine diversification that leaves him with a $977 million stake and signals no loss of confidence in the retailer's 18% annual gain.

Richard M. Schulze, founder and Chairman Emeritus of Best Buy, sold 900,000 shares worth $74 million over July 13 and July 14, 2026. The transactions were executed at a weighted average price of $82.21 per share, according to a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The mechanics of the disposal are critical for market professionals assessing its implications. Schulze executed the trade via a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan adopted on June 12, 2026. These pre-arranged programs allow corporate insiders to establish a schedule for selling shares, effectively removing the ability to trade on material, non-public information.

The scale of the transaction also warrants context. The sale reduced Schulze's indirect holdings, which are held through a revocable trust, by roughly 7%. Despite this offloading, he retains an indirect interest in approximately 11.6 million shares. This remaining position constitutes 6% of Best Buy's total outstanding stock and carried a market value of $976.89 million at the July 14 closing price of $83.98.

Institutional investors typically scrutinize large insider sales for signs of waning executive confidence. In this instance, the structural framework and the retained equity heavily dilute any bearish reading. Schulze liquidated a fraction of his holdings after the consumer electronics retailer delivered an 18% total return over the trailing 12 months. Monetizing a small portion of a concentrated position after a significant run-up is standard practice for wealth management, particularly when the insider maintains nearly $1 billion in residual exposure.

Best Buy provides the fundamental backdrop for this insider activity. The company operates a dual-segment model across domestic and international markets, relying on a mix of physical retail locations and digital channels. It generates its $41.9 billion in trailing 12-month revenue through direct product sales and carrier commissions on mobile phone services. With a market capitalization of $17.7 billion and a workforce of approximately 82,000, Best Buy remains a dominant force in North American specialty technology retail.
