Options traders target crypto equities on rebound expectations
Aggressive call buying on Coinbase, Strategy and the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF signals that derivatives traders are positioning for a sharp cryptocurrency recovery driven by favorable US political tailwinds.
Options traders are aggressively purchasing call options on Coinbase Global, Strategy, and the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF. This derivatives activity indicates a strong market consensus that cryptocurrency prices are poised for a sharp rebound. The positioning highlights how quickly sentiment can shift following periods of intense volatility.
Coinbase shares closed near $176 on Tuesday, representing a roughly 10% jump in a single session. This rally is particularly notable given that the stock had dipped below $150 earlier in the month, reflecting the rapid swings in digital asset valuations. The surge was directly accompanied by heightened options trading activity, where bullish bets only turn profitable if digital asset prices sustain their upward trajectory.
The renewed optimism in the derivatives space is largely anchored in Washington. Since taking office, US President Donald Trump has implemented policies viewed as highly beneficial to the digital asset sector, living up to his self-proclaimed title as the "first crypto president." His administration's push to curb regulatory friction has provided a fundamental catalyst that options traders are now rushing to capture.
Financial disclosures released late last month quantify the scale of the administration's crypto entanglement. Trump's companies received nearly $800 million from World Liberty Financial, a crypto venture he co-founded with his sons. This figure includes over $520 million from crypto token sales and more than $250 million from the sale of business interests in the venture.
Beyond World Liberty Financial, Trump realized an additional $635 million from the sale of his Trump meme coins. The acceleration of these gains is staggering; just a year ago, his companies reported $57.35 million from World Liberty token sales. That represents a nine-fold increase in crypto-related revenue over a twelve-month period.
For market professionals, this convergence of executive policy and personal financial windfalls creates a unique trading dynamic. While the underlying cryptocurrency market has experienced sharp volatility since Trump took office, the derivatives market is currently pricing in a firm floor under digital assets. The heavy call buying suggests investors believe the pro-crypto administration will continue to act as a structural backstop against prolonged downturns.
However, leveraged positioning through call options carries distinct risks. If the anticipated rebound fails to materialize, these aggressive bullish bets will expire worthless, potentially triggering a sudden unwind in crypto-adjacent equities. Until the spot market confirms the recovery, the current options activity remains a speculative bet on political tailwinds rather than a reflection of immediate fundamental improvement.
