SBI Funds IPO debuts at 6.3% premium, largest Indian listing of 2026

SBI Funds Management closed 6.3% above its issue price after raising ₹9,813 crore in India's largest IPO of the year, signalling robust investor demand for the country's expanding mutual fund sector.

SBI Funds Management made its market debut on Tuesday, closing 6.3% above its initial public offering price. The asset manager raised ₹9,813 crore in the offering, making it the largest Indian IPO of 2026. The issue was subscribed 41.66 times, reflecting strong demand from institutional and retail investors.

At Tuesday's close, the company commanded a market capitalisation of ₹1.24 lakh crore. This valuation trails its closest rival, ICICI Prudential Asset Management, which currently holds a market value of ₹1.55 lakh crore.

The joint venture between State Bank of India and French asset manager Amundi sold roughly 10% of its paid-up equity capital. Both parent companies monetised portions of their stakes, allowing them to realise significant value. However, SBI's chairman signalled the bank will hold onto its remaining stake.

"SBI has invested around ₹6,000 crore in SBI Funds Management," said CS Setty, Chairman of SBI. He noted that the bank's backing has driven the asset manager's growth and continues to support investor confidence.

The asset manager oversees roughly ₹12.5 lakh crore in assets, giving it a 15.3% share of the Indian mutual fund market as of March 31. Looking ahead, the firm plans to expand its distribution network and target B30 markets, which are locations beyond the country's top 30 mutual fund cities.

A key growth driver will be the alternative investment space. "Our Alternative Investment Funds (AIF) is one of the big areas where we are making major investments," said Debasish Mishra, CEO of SBI Funds Management. "So, you will see us announcing some new product capabilities on that, and we are also getting capabilities, both managing and raising funds."

Mishra highlighted that Category II AIFs currently make up a significant portion of the alternative market. Amundi's Deputy CEO, Nicolas Calcoen, reinforced the strategic commitment, stating the firm is dedicated to India and will continue to inject global expertise into the venture. This international backing will be crucial as SBI Funds attempts to capture a larger slice of the high-margin alternative investment sector.
