Dorsey's Block Unveils Open-Source Chat App for AI Teams

Jack Dorsey’s Block has launched an open-source team chat application built on the Nostr protocol, staking a claim in the enterprise market for software that integrates human workers with AI agents.

Block has introduced Buzz, a new workspace application designed to host both human teams and artificial intelligence agents within a shared environment. Built on the decentralized Nostr protocol, the platform represents a direct challenge to proprietary corporate communication tools like Slack.

The application allows users to transition seamlessly from messaging into project management, coding, and public relations workflows. Block noted that the interface mirrors standard modern team communication software, a deliberate design choice intended to minimize friction for corporate adoption.

The release signals Block’s strategic effort to capture the enterprise market for AI-assisted collaboration. As companies integrate autonomous software into daily operations, the underlying infrastructure becomes a high-stakes battleground between open-source advocates and proprietary software giants. “Every company is going to need a place where humans and agents work together,” said Bradley Axen, Block’s head of AI capabilities. “The question is whether that place is proprietary or open. We built Buzz because we believe it should be open.”

For Dorsey, who announced the software on X, Buzz is the latest vehicle for his broader philosophy of decentralization. He described the application as “model-agnostic, decentralized, self-sovereign, and open source,” tailored “for teams of people and agents of all sizes.”

The development aligns with Block’s long-term trajectory since Dorsey departed Twitter in 2021 to focus entirely on payments and Bitcoin adoption. He has previously stated his ambition for the cryptocurrency to become everyday money. Through subsidiaries like Square, which processes Bitcoin payments via the Lightning Network, and Cash App, which facilitates retail Bitcoin trading, Block has steadily constructed a crypto-adjacent financial ecosystem.

Entering the enterprise software market with a Nostr-based product extends this decentralized framework from consumer finance into corporate operations. It follows Block’s expansion into specialized hardware, including last year’s launch of a Bitcoin mining rig featuring swappable parts designed to reduce equipment maintenance and replacement costs for miners.
