Mistral in talks to raise €3bn at €20bn led by EQT fund

The French AI company is securing a massive Series D that could mark the inaugural investment from the EU's €5bn Scaleup Fund, reflecting a strategic shift toward enterprise software.

Mistral is in talks to raise a €3bn Series D round at a valuation of approximately €20bn. The EU’s €5bn Scaleup Fund, managed by EQT, is negotiating to lead or co-lead the financing. If finalized, the deal would represent the flagship superfund's first investment.

The potential involvement of the EQT-managed vehicle signals a major validation for European AI infrastructure. Policymakers established the Scaleup Fund to prevent homegrown tech champions from being absorbed by foreign rivals. Backing Mistral would directly deploy state-supported capital toward retaining strategic capabilities within the continent.

Valuation mechanics for the round are heavily influenced by Mistral’s evolving business model. The French startup is increasingly positioning itself as Europe’s answer to Palantir, shifting its focus toward integrated enterprise applications rather than solely competing on foundational models. This strategic pivot toward high-margin software solutions typically commands stronger pricing multiples, altering how investors underwrite the company.

The proposed funding underscores a wider acceleration of capital deployment into European deep tech. Separately, Cambridge-based CuspAI recently secured $450m, reaching a $2.6bn valuation to advance AI-driven materials discovery. These parallel raises indicate that institutional capital is moving beyond early-stage experimentation to heavily fund commercialization phases.

This private capital momentum is reinforced by public sector mechanisms. The European Investment Fund recently launched a €15bn fund of funds explicitly designed to back 100 growth-stage venture capital firms. Together, these vehicles create a layered capital architecture intended to scale European startups well past their early growth phases.

For market professionals, Mistral's round will serve as a critical pricing benchmark for the continent's top-tier AI assets. The transition from a pure research lab to an enterprise software vendor dictates whether a €20bn valuation reflects sustainable revenue potential or remains anchored in speculative hype.
